photographing deer is always challenging, even if they are
"used to people" they are still more than happy to run away just as you are about to get that special picture, like this red stag. Deer can often be seen sniffing the air, and can smell you comming before you can see them, so getting close is a very hard thing to do, and it is often far better to find your spot before the deer arrive and just sit and wait quietly, and even then it's not certain you will see them.
Our photographer spent about three hours laying behind a fallen tree to get these two photos and it was the closes he had ever been to the big stag and his "ladies", and even though this was taken in a deer park, it was 05:30 when he arrived there .
